Investigation of Tropical Cyclone Wind Models With Application to Storm Tide Simulations

چکیده
The hazards induced by tropical cyclones (TCs), for example, high winds, extreme precipitation, and storm tides, are closely related to the TC surface wind field. Parametric models distribution have been widely used risk analysis due their simplicity efficiency in application. Here we revisit parametric modeling of fields, including symmetrical asymmetrical components, its applications tide North Atlantic. field has motion vertical shear; however, find that a simple empirical background-wind model, based solely on rotation scaling vector, can largely capture observed asymmetry. implicit inclusion shear effect be understood with climatological relationship between general directions during hurricane seasons. For symmetric field, Holland profile is chosen as benchmark physics-based complete model connecting inner core outer region performs superiorly compared data set. When forcing simulations, integrated asymmetry reproduce tides lower errors than often-used coupled translation-speed-based method.

A CYCLONE INDUCED STORM SURGE FORECASTING MODEL FOR THE COAST OF BANGLADESH WITH APPLICATION TO THE CYCLONE `SIDR'
The coast of Bangladesh has a specialty in terms of high bending and many off- shore islands. Incorporation of the coastline and island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme is essential for accurate estimation of water levels due to surge. For that purpose a numerical scheme consisting of very fine mesh is required along the coastal belt, whereas this is unnecessary away from the coast. In...

Horizontal winds at 850 hPa from tropical cyclones retrieved using the nonlinear balance equation, where the mass field was determined from Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) temperature soundings, are compared with the surface wind fields derived from NASA’s Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) and Hurricane Research Division H*Wind analyses. It was found that the AMSU-derived wind speeds at 85...
متن کامل2b.6 Relating Tropical Cyclone Rainfall Patterns to Storm Size
During the period 1970-1999, Rappaport (2000) found that almost 60% of TC-related deaths in the U.S. were due to fresh water floods caused by heavy rainfall. To reduce this statistic, it is important to improve the accuracy of TC rainfall forecasts by examining the spatial distribution of the rain shield about the criculation center of the storm. Previous researchers have investigated TC rainfa...
متن کاملEffects of Vertical Wind Shear and Storm Motion on Tropical Cyclone Rainfall Asymmetries Deduced from TRMM
Vertical wind shear and storm motion are two of the most important factors contributing to rainfall asymmetries in tropical cyclones (TCs). Global TC rainfall structure, in terms of azimuthal distribution and asymmetries relative to storm motion, has been previously described using the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Microwave Imager rainfall estimates. The mean TC rainfall distribution and...
متن کاملReexamination of Tropical Cyclone Wind–Pressure Relationships
Tropical cyclone wind–pressure relationships are reexamined using 15 yr of minimum sea level pressure estimates, numerical analysis fields, and best-track intensities. Minimum sea level pressure is estimated from aircraft reconnaissance or measured from dropwindsondes, and maximum wind speeds are interpolated from best-track maximum 1-min wind speed estimates. The aircraft data were collected p...
